What is Sports
Information?
Sports Information,
or Athletic Communications as it is known at some colleges,
typically describes the office or department within a college's
athletic department or collegiate athletic conference that
handles the media relations, statistical record-keeping, publicity,
and other related aspects of the given athletic department
or conference. These days, most Sports Information professionals
are expected to be excellent writers, proficient in publication
and web design, familiar with several statistical software
programs, and have a variety of other skills. At many
smaller non-scholarship schools, including where I work at
Washington College, there
is only one or two full-time member of the Sports Information
Office. At the other end of the spectrum, the largest
NCAA Division I institutions may employ around one dozen Sports
Information employees, including Assistant S.I.D.s, interns,
graduate assistants, publication specialists, and/or web editors.
Most Sports Information professionals are members of the College
Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).
My Sports Information Background
I began working
in the field of Sports Information in September of 1997
during my first semester as a student at Goucher College.
Over my four years at Goucher, I served under three separate
S.I.D.'s and saw my responsibilities increase each year.
By my senior year, I was serving as a de facto Assistant
S.I.D., writing about 40 % of the releases generated by
our office, aiding in the design and maintenance of our
web site and our publications, and serving in various other
capacities. During my junior year, I also completed
a brief internship with the Department of Athletic Communications
at nearby Loyola
College, a Division I institution. My experiences
as a student helped me acquire my present job of Sports
Information Director at Washington
College right out of college. For examples of
my Sports Information press releases and other work, please
browse WashingtonCollegeSports.com,
which I designed. The Washington College Atheltics web site
receives between 800-2,000 unique visitors a day.
